Yeah, dont get me wrong, he still played very well. The instance that stands out in my mind, which I thought was hilarious, was during "An Englishman In New York", off of Nothing Like The Sun.
It was the middle break, before the swing section, and Vinnie was drinking, and having a smoke while keeping the time, and then it was like, "Hmm? Oh yeah, the swing part... let me put down my drink here..." and with cigarette in mouth, comes in perfectly, and plays the part masterfully. What struck me was that even with Vinnie's mental V8 firing on only 4 cylinders, he was still more than up to the task of Sting's music. The only thing I was disappointed about was that Vinnie wasnt given an "I Burn For You" - type soloing opportunity. Can you imagine what he would have put into that solo if he had the chance?

The stuff i read recently here(and elsewhere) about Vinnie turning down the Sting tour doesnt suprise me.
I think Strings music started sucking the drumming life out him, especially after being away from home for so long.
I've always wondered if this '95-'97 period is when he fully converted to christianity? Any thoughts??

Isn't it funny how a thread on a different drummer always ends up leading to "The One?" I've witnessed and heard many stories about "strange" behavior concerning Vinnie. What is so strange? For me,it's just proof that he IS human! It's perfectly clear that it IS NOT about showbiz to him. How honest and humbling to admit that he wasn't into playing that day. Can you imagine being expected to do what he does all the time? I cannot even pretend to understand what he has gone through, nor should I. I can only hope that he is well so we may enjoy his gift for many years to come. I enjoy a plethora of drummers but Vinnie will always be "The One"....for me...no debate...no discussion

Hi eaglebeat....
No problem...here goes - over the last couple of months I've got:
Live in Mijazaki Japan 1994 - good TV sourced show. I've had this as a cd boot for a while - Vinnie really cooks, and some of his hi hat work is, as aleays, insirational. One of the best things about this DVD is the fact that, for a good part of the show, he plays matched grip with his snare angled to accomodate the power stroke - then he switdhes to trad grip and plays the snare angled toward him with no hint of awkwardness!
A compilation DVD of shows from the Mercury Falling tours - there are no official recorded videos, so, for reasons outlined in my post above, I was keen to get hold of them - Vinnie's playing on the 'You Still Touch Me' is solid grooving personified, as is 'Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot'.
A complete DVD copy of the Oslo concert from 1993.
A compilation of French TV shows from 1994-1996 (see above).
I also got a brazilian DVd of the Unplugged session
I'm also about to gethold of DVD copies of Ten Summoner's Tales, and Summoner's Travles.
Hope this information helps, Eagle

Did anybody catch Keith, last night at the Granny's? He was amazing. Sting wore a dress or was it a skirt with stockings? He did that so he could swap outfits with Trudie after the show, ha! Sting sounded really good though, nice new take on Roxanne.

Yep, I saw Sting @ The Grammy's. Keith was very impressive and had his own unique style. He reminded me of Vinne in the way he played Roxanne actually as he was slamming it!
Great to hear another guy with his own unique voice too. I look forward to a live dvd or cd from Sting featuring Keith.
By the way, does ANYONE have the Sting live in Oslo gig with Vinnie on drums at all? I used to watch it constantly until I leant it to a mate and never saw it again!
I always look at the dvd section of record shops, but it doesn't appear to be on commercial release... Please message me if you have it.... I'll be your best friend!!!!!!
